Welcome to our web site for Hang gliding in Cyprus.
In this site you may find everything that concerns Hang gliding in Cyprus, as
well as regulations, detailed maps and other useful information that you can download
from our Web Page.
To begin with, we would like to stress that once
you are in Cyprus like in most countries it is strongly recommended to get in
touch with us. Any information that we provide through this web site regarding
recommended sites for flying, weather conditions and generally all aspects of
this sport in Cyprus makes us responsible to present it with accuracy. Further
to this reality we would like to state that the intention of this web site is
not to promote Cyprus as the best destination for these activities, but to offer
the foreign visitor or local who is active in this sport some basic information
about this activity in Cyprus.
Many of the sites that we give information about
are easily accessible to all with amenities near by like restaurants close to
the landing zones etc. Some other sites presented will not be so accessible and
will not be suitable for everyone. Furthermore, some sites which are referred
to in this web site, might not be up to the standards that define a region suitable
for flight and may not be recommended by the local Federation. In this circumstance
some pilots would avoid flying in these locations. Other pilots on the other hand
would not consider it very important.
Another reason to choose to contact us before
embarking on a flying trip is that some locations due to being remote are not
often visited by pilots and it is likely that the take off spots will need cleaning
from bushes beforehand. If you don't do this and find yourself wasting a trip
to such a location, we would like to request that you avoid complaining to us
for not providing accurate information for the site.
Another factor that the visitor should note is
the political problem of Cyprus. As you might well know, a part of the island
of Cyprus (approximately 37%) is being illegally occupied by Turkey since 1974
after a military invasion. Even though this subject is totally irrelevant with
the contents of our web site, the reference to this fact is made purely for the
purpose of basic information since some sites do neighbor the occupied territories
of Cyprus. More specifically the site Miti tou Dia (The Zeus nose) which is an
excellent flying site is less than 3km from the occupied areas. Also Vouyies is
less than 1km where at Pachyammos that is an excelent site for ridge soaring the
landing zone is right next to these areas (Kokina village). We would also like
to stress that flying to the occupied areas could cause a political incident or
cause the reaction of the Cyprus or the occupation army resulting in putting the
safety of the pilot in danger.
Other restrictions in flying exist close or over
military areas. Specifically no local pilot flies over military installations
or other sensitive areas that have to do with the military.
For Emergencies, the telephone number that you
can use is 199, which you can use throughout Cyprus. You can also use the local
Telephone directory to find the telephone numbers for the local Police Station
and the closest First Aid facility.
In our information list for each site, you can
also find interesting information for other non-flying related matters on the
area. Cyprus is an established tourist destination, so we thought it would be
nice to include places of interest close to each site.
Although this site is not intended to
be used commercially, in order to help the foreign visitor to find a place to
stay in the area if he/she wishes, we regularly recommend suitable places that
can offer accommodation. For these recommended places, these are only intended
to help visiting pilots. This reference is usually limited to places that promote
agrotourism, and are not financially supported by their owners in any way.
As far as the attitude of local people to the sport,
we can say with much pride that this is excellent, and the pilots are seen without
prejudice, something that is confirmed to as by many foreign pilots. But in order
to be able to enjoy this freedom to fly without any problems, we are always careful
to comply with all local regulations and fly without causing any problem to any
property during take off and landing, and generally are careful with our entire
flying activity.
Last but not least, we would like to remind you
that we take great pleasure in helping all pilots with all kinds of advise, and
any other help that they might need for flying in Cyprus. So, we wish you long
hours of good flying in Cyprus.
